Even though some beans can help you lose weight by speeding up your metabolism, the galacto-oligosaccharides in beans and legumes can cause stomach pain and indigestion.
Komova says that beans, like lentils and peas, have a lot of raffinose, which is a complex sugar that is hard to break down.
"They can also make you gassy because they have a lot of fiber," she says. "If you have regular stomach problems, I suggest you eat less of these foods."
In the same way, potatoes have a lot of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. If you eat too many, though, the starch in them could make you gain weight.
"White potatoes are the starchy vegetables you should avoid if you want a flat stomach," says Mitri.
The glycemic index of white potatoes is also very high (GI). She says that GI tells you how quickly a food will raise your blood sugar.
"If it has a high GI, it tends to raise your blood sugar very quickly," says Mitri. If your blood sugar continues rising, it might increase your risk of inflammation and abdominal fat.
